Flat feet or ‘fallen arches’, is known as Pes Planus in medical terminology. This foot type when weight bearing on the ground has little if no arch shape which collapses forming the ‘flat foot’ shape where most of the sole of the foot is in contact with the floor. It can occur in either one foot or both feet.
A person with flat feet tends to over pronate, which is when the ankle rolls inwards too much as we walk. This can lead to painful symptoms including heel pain, knee pain medially, and conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spur syndrome.
The good news is that with Insole or Orthotic therapy posture can be improved re-aligning all of the muscles and ligaments needed to make your gait comfortable and pain free. It is essential that you consult a Podiatrist for fitting of these as an incorrect choice of insole or Orthotic can be equally detrimental causing your posture to be even worse increasing pain and discomfort.
